Most people can't read. Hold on now! I don't mean to say they don't know how to read, just that the busy schedule and hectic lifestyle makes reading either a chore or an outright impossibility. To be illiterate in today's western world is to be computer illiterate. But since gram'ma, the toddler, and the family cat all get their paws on a touchscreen on a regular basis; this will soon be a thing of the past.
What does this have to do with Podcast Addict? If you can't read a book, at least listen to a podcast. The Podcasting phenomenon is one of the most significant benefits of today's interconnected world. If you can source some useful podcast, then the time you spend commuting, jogging, and even showering can be allocated to improve your general knowledge and also make you think for a change; Not to mention that it reduces the time you spend watching the idiot box. All the pluses!
I must confess that I'm an avid consumer of Youtube. Unfortunately, even though there's plenty of educational material on that huge platform, the devs seem poised not to let you play the "video" with the device screen turned off. I've gone on and tried several tools that circumvent this problem, but none proved to be ergonomic enough. So then an idea popped into my head. What if I get a podcast player?
In all honesty, Podcast Addict is the first and only app that I installed for this purpose. However, what kept me using it, is that I could find even the most obscure podcasts that I could think of listening. The search engine is excellent as well as the scrapping. You will always get one or more thumbnails and the podcast description, no matter how the source page is organized.
Podcast Addict allows you to stream your podcasts, but also to download them. A marking system lets you hide listened or uninteresting episodes. You can also create playlists.
The app also features a configurable widget, on which you can enable or disable function buttons, to suit your preferences.
Podcast Addict is entirely free, and you can also choose which style of ads you are more comfortable to be assaulted with (bottom screen banner or full-screen interstitial). You can also donate to remove the ads and to support the creator on Patreon.
- Very competent search engine
- Suggests new or trending podcasts
- Browse podcast networks
- Adjust playback speed and skip silence
- MP3 Player
- Chromecast & SONOS support
- Customizable widget
I generally found the app to work flawlessly. I have some minor gripes with the interface though, especially when it comes to button alignment, but that is a small nitpick. In a week since installing it, Podcast Addict is the number one app that's sucking battery power out of my phone, and it hasn't disappointed me yet.
